A horticultural treasure!

Acer palmatum 'Beni Schichihenge' , also known as the Beni Schichihenge Japanese Maple, has beautiful variegation. uit receioves its name from the Japanese translation meaning 'red and changing'. Introduced from Japan in 1967, this multicolored maple is a real collectors item. The Beni Schichihenge has a strong white edge and pink blush. The green centers slowly fade to white with with distinct pink edges. The variegation is spontaneous, varying from year to year. Pictured below is the pink spring growth. This slow grower reaches 4-5' after ten years. With upright growth habit, it eventually reaches height 10-12' tall. Vertrees says "This cultivar is highly desirable and attracts much attention but is still rather rare."
