Acer palmatum 'Beni Schichihenge', also known as the Beni Schichihenge Maple has beautiful variegation. The Japanese translation for Beni Schichihenge means 'red and changing'. This multicolored Japanese Maple has a strong white edge and pink blush. Introduced from Japan in 1967, the Beni Schichihenge is a real collector's item. The variegation on Beni Schichihenge Japanese maples is very sporadic, varying from year to year. Pictured below is the pink spring growth, when green leaf centers slowly fade to white remaining pink edges.This slow grower reaches 4-5' by ten years. With upright growth habit, it eventually reaches 10-12' tall, the size of a small tree. Vertrees says "This cultivar is highly desirable and attracts much attention but is still rather rare."
