CONSIDERED A LIVING FOSSIL!
ONCE THOUGHT TO BE EXTINCT!
Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Jack Frost' is a beautiful variegated form of the Dawn Redwood. This deciduous conifer has many of the same characteristics as the species, though it is much slower growing than most Metasequoias, and is also slightly smaller. Jack Frost's needles are light green and fern-like, with large snow-white dots, which fade to a solid light green in the summer. Its growth habit is narrow and pyramidal with horizontal branches. Jack Frost grows approximately 15 feet tall, and six feet wide in ten years. Zone 4-
The Ancient Dawn Redwood is considered a "living fossil". It dates from prehistoric times, and was thought to be extinct. However, it was discovered in China in 1941. Seeds were collected in the mid 1940's by the Arnold Arboretum and brought back to the United States, where it now grows again. One of only a few deciduous conifers.
